The 'control and feel' of a game doesn't determine the IP at all, honestly. After a few iterations, nearly all game IPs have had a change in controls, or gameplay mechanics, or completely revamped entirely! Fallout is a great example, even though it was a change of ownership that made it's change. Another is Resident Evil. Rainbow Six too, as it went from slow, methodical planning, to a faster paced action, to now a twitch competition shooter not to far from an arena shooter that's been modernized. Games are like bands. Even bands evolve and their music changes over time. If something doesn't change, then it gets stale, and most people stop playing. Why do you think they are shaking up CoD again this time? The base gameplay it's relied on so much is failing to capture the same sales it used to.
